Boston Globe Spotlight work
Work for the Boston Globe Spotlight Team following the bankruptcy of Steward Health Care. On August 31, 2024, Carney Hospital in Dorchester, MA, closed, leaving hundreds of employees without jobs and tens of thousands of patients 20 minutes from the nearest hospital. CEO of Steward Health Care, Ralph de la Torre, is under investigation for his spending habits leading to the bankruptcy. He was subpoenaed to Washington, D.C., on September 12, 2024, before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions. De la Torre did not show. Four witnesses, including two nurses, the Louisiana Senator, and the West Monroe Louisiana Mayor, appeared before the senate to share their experiences and answer the senators’ questions. Congress is now poised to hold De la Torre in contempt.
